Fiction: A form of ancient torture using extreme pressure.

Fact: Acupressure applies pressure to particular points on the body to re-establish the flow of energy. Definitely not torture.

Those who are shy of needles will be glad to know that unlike acupuncture, no needles are used in the technique of acupressure. Instead, pressure is applied on the body’s “acupoints” with the hands, fingers and thumbs.

These acupoints are part of a vast network of energy channels through which energy continually travels in the body. Pressure on these acupoints helps to clear a blocked energy flow and re-establish harmony and wellbeing.

Rooted in Traditional Chinese medicine, acupressure has a number of benefits for the body and the mind. Aside from improving the flow of vital energy, acupressure can, at a physiological level, stimulate blood circulation and increase the secretion of neurotransmitters.

Recent studies have shown that acupressure can be useful for treating pain, and reducing anxiety and agitation. As a tool against stress and depression, acupressure may be more effective than conventional talk therapy. The list of benefits and uses of acupressure is nothing short of astounding—this is one kind of pressure we can live with!
