Fiction: For the spiritually enlightened only.

Fact: Anyone can learn this healing technique.

Reiki literally means “universal life energy.” Rediscovered in the mid-1800s, Reiki is a gentle yet powerful healing technique that uses this life energy—also known as “Ki” in Japanese, “Chi” in Chinese, and as “Prana” in the Hindu religion—to help promote balance and healing. Reiki can work on all levels of being, whether the physical body, your mental state, your energetic body, or all of these at once.

When an individual receives a Reiki session, the practitioner uses a series of hand positions to transmit the Reiki—or universal life energy—to the individual.

These hand positions are usually a light, steady touch directly on the body, but they can also be done by holding the hands just above the body, without touching.

In this act, the practitioner is not manipulating, directing or interpreting the energy or the individual, but is rather acting as a conduit through which the energy may flow to wherever it is needed most.

Reiki has helped to support healing in everything from fractures to chronic pain and disease, from stress to depression, and has helped many to develop a positive outlook and make lasting life changes. Certainly, one of the best parts of Reiki is that absolutely anyone—old, young, other-abled—can learn it, and everyone can receive it, including animals. In short, Reiki is a wonderfully simple yet ever-unfolding healing art that will keep one learning and experiencing for a lifetime.
